December 1st - December 23, 2023
In developing this group exhibition, we were drawn to a quotation by Joseph Campbell:
“Myths are public dreams, dreams are private myths.”
This concept not only provided a name for the show but also resonated with our desires to explore broader cultural lore and the personal mythologies of the artists. Importantly, this show has taken a new "pulse" of the folk beliefs and traditions of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Folklore continuously evolves to be relevant for the time and place that stories are shared. By asking these artists to interpret a well-known folk belief, or create a new legend, we uncover a view into the modern psyche surrounding this religion and culture. Our collective folklore is a tapestry of tapestries, a recursive system of stories informing stories. Through exploring this theme, we hope to encourage viewers not only to appreciate their inherited folklore but also to continue its legacy and relevance.
