Artist Statement: I have always shied away from painting images of Christ. I felt uncomfortable and honestly, not worthy of giving Him a face, saying THIS is who Christ is. I feel it’s a deeply personal relationship that makes Christ physically recognizable to each of us. And yet for this piece, I felt it was time. As I worked on the piece, the feeling it would convey was very important to me. Most of my energy and thoughts were spent pondering how Christ must have felt during the different moments of betrayal leading up to his Crucifixion. I felt a deepened sense of the hurt He endured, as those he loved turned aside. I was brought to tears as a great sorrow and mourning filled my heart at the thought of the humiliation and mockery the soldiers sought to inflict upon Him as He was physically assailed. I was pained. I was hurt. And I was humbled. The soldiers sought to mock Christ as the King of Jews, when in reality, He is THE King of Kings.
