Artist Statement: Despite the vital and historical importance of the atoning sacrifice by our Savior, the taboo surrounding the cross and crucifixion remains in my culture. Inspired by centuries of representations, especially those found in beautiful Catholic cathedrals, I desired to create an image of the crucifixion for my community that honors this tradition and incorporates the beauty of restored doctrine.At the base of the cross, near the feet of Jesus, are the words “Hoc Est Opus Meum Et Gloria Meum,” Latin for “This Is My Work and My Glory” (Moses 1:39). In this modern scripture, Jesus states His purpose as bringing to pass our immortality and eternal life. The halo surrounding Jesus, printed darkly to add weight, holds the masses (each of us) upon His arms, witnessing His sacrifice in our behalf. In creamy white and low contrast, the masses continue, receding into the background to emphasize the infinite and personal nature of Christ’s atonement.
